As gold and silver are precious and expensive of all metals, a thin layer of gold is coated/plated on other metals (silver, copper, brass, etc.) so that one can get a metal with the look and feel of gold but at much lower price. Purity and weight (gram) of plated gold and silver helps to determine the actual worth of an object.
